Rhino Rampage
Move to safety before the Rhino rumbles! Rhino Rampage is like a cross between Buckaroo and Hungry Hippos.
The game consists of a big purple Rhino on a swamp-like platform with stepping stones, 12 chunky brightly coloured birds in blue, green, red and yellow, and an 8-sided dice. Each person gets 3 birds.
To move, players roll the dice and if they get a number, they’re free to travel along the stones. However, if a rhino symbol lands face up, they must pull the tail of the big purple fella in the middle, which might result in him stomping and causing that player to go back to the start.
The aim of the game is straightforward - a player has to get all his/her little birds to safety atop Rhino’s back. But watch out - Rhino could rumble at any time and throw the birds off. The first person to move all their birds along the stepping stones and onto Rhino’s back wins the game.
Rhino Rampage can be played fairly quickly so there’s little chance of children becoming bored. However, the game does come with 2 sets of rules, one for young children and another for older kids, which allows for an element of skill to be introduced. In the more advanced version, tactics can be employed to ensure other players don’t get the upper hand. For example, it’s possible to block someone from moving a bird by landing on the same space as them. If that happens, the new bird is placed on top of the one already there. Now that bird is unable to move until they manage to roll a ‘free bird’ on the dice.
Regardless of the set of rules used, this fast-paced game for 2 or more players is great fun for children and grown-ups to play together. It would be an ideal choice for Christmas day.
Suitable for ages 4 and up, Rhino Rampage is available for around £11.99.
